Week 5: Project-based Learning, WebQuests, and rubrics

Hello dear colleagues,

Week 5 brings a lot of dynamic approaches to my attention. PBL, WebQuests, and rubrics are all alternative assessment tools about which we, teachers, must strategize as they contribute to collaborative classroom learning.

I get armed not only with ICT competencies, but also with the teaching skills I need to help my students be collaborative, problem-solving and creative learners. Using the technology tools, students will prepare themselves to the real world.

What gets measured gets done. Rubrics is a recipe for success. It's an authentic tool that links objectives and performance. It communicates to students what is expected of them and provides feedback to them. I create rubrics for students' oral presentations (debates, role plays), exam essays (content, organization and mechanics). I use checklists to assess student- teachers and also students use them to assess me.

In my book, teacher should be Fair, Firm, Frank, friendly and funny. The different roles of the teacher can set a good example for students to follow. Students' group and collaborative work can resolve conflicts, build self-esteem, maximize cooperative work and engage the disengaged. Students can assess themselves and their peers and develop autonomy.

Congratulations to all those who could start creating their webquests. I'll create one next term God's willing. Thanks Robert, Janine and classmates for sharing your projects and delicious links.

All the best for all with their projects and WebQuests,

Safaa

  1. Hello Safaa,

Nice pictorial way of simplifying and explaining web-based teaching and learning! I completely agree with you on the importance of rubrics and teacher's multiple role(s) in making teaching and learning really effective. Assessment and teaching/learning are closely related and have great impact on learners' motivation. In my country we have to grapple with the problem of examination-oriented learners because there exits a mismatch among the goals of language learning, the class room teaching and testing.

I have always appreciated your informative and instructive posts which talk volumes of your dedication to the profession.

    Keep up the good work!

    Best regards,

    Rajinder

    1. Hello Rajinder,

Thank you for the nice words and congratulations on your Persuasive essay WebQuest. Surely, you'll raise students' motivation.

I do envy you and all those who had enough time to create their amazing WebQuests.

Teachers everywhere have problems. Though the system imposes on us teaching for the test, we can find the engaging tool and project to get students to be well prepared for the test.

      All the best,

      Safaa

  2. Hi Safaa,

Let me thank you for your comments on my blog which mainly concentrated on the efforts I have been taking to improve the writing skills of my students.

Your reflection on Project Based Learning , Web quest and Rubrics is enriching, the pictorial presentation, what a smart student should know, the 12 principles,is informative and it includes all that is expected from an ideal student.
Also your book reference to the qualities of a great teacher: "Fair, Firm, Frank, friendly and funny" would make teachers ask themselves to review their approach to students.

I agree with you that the teaching community has a greater role to play in molding the personality of a student.

    1. Hi Smiles,

I do appreciate your reply. As teachers, our main focus is on the final product, the students. We seek to provide them with a well-rounded education which will in turn help them be good citizens and be prepared for workforce.

The best is yet to come!
